Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has not ruled out the possibility of Celtic qualifying into the knockout stages of the Champions league despite scoring the goal that resulted in a 1-0 defeat for the Scottish club. Barcelona were, for long parts of the match, reminded of the defeat they suffered at the hands of the Scottish club here last season. A solitary goal from Cesc Fabregas in the 75th minute was enough to put the Spanish club with the second consecutive victory in the group stages.

After the match, Fabregas has said that he had seen enough of Celtic to suggest that they will not be a contender to qualify for the knockout stages. Barcelona beat Ajax 4-0 in the first group match, while AC Milan are not in the greatest of form at the moment. Hence, this group could be a three-way fight between Milan, Celtic, and Ajax for the runners-up spot. Barcelona are the favourites to win the group after having taken six points already.

The Spanish champions were coming into the encounter without star man Lionel Messi, who is ruled out for the next few weeks with a muscle injury. Fabregas, who has been in great form since the start of the season, once again demonstrated his importance to the club by scoring the only goal of the match.

“Ajax and Celtic were two very different games for us. Can they beat Ajax over the next two games? Listen, I think Celtic can beat anyone, especially at home. They have a very good team, they have great commitment and they also have those supporters behind them, which means they really can beat anyone in Glasgow. Everything is still possible for them in this group,” said Fabregas after the match. Barcelona will face Milan away from home in the next group match.
